The Need
The secondary level is fee paying. In order to attend secondary school a student must have high marks in the primary leaving exam. He or she must buy a complete uniform as well as a mattress, bedding, washing equipment, school supplies. Most also need to buy text books and calculators. All these costs added to transport to and from school are beyond the means of most parents in our area.

It is not surprising that the majority of children cannot afford to attend fee-based high schools and universities. We believe in the power of education which enables young people to learn to participate in the political process, understanding the value of 'promises' and what is right. They learn to be assertive, protecting themselves against traditional and cultural pressures. They know how to get help and advice outside their immediate community. Girls in particular are more likely to choose a worthwhile partner. Studies have shown that the children of educated parents are healthier and usually go to school. They look after their own health better, knowing how to protect themselves from water borne diseases, malaria, STD's and HIV. With education and confidence these young people tend to become leaders in their communities.
