Sponsoring A Student - How You Can Help

In January each year, KEEF volunteers interview and select students to receive scholarships based upon their financial need and academic potential. The number of students KEEF can select depends on the number of sponsors that donate.

Ideally, we try to attract sponsors who will cover the annual cost for a Kenyan student to attend secondary school for four years.

Your donation of $500 will pay the tuition, uniform, and room and board for a Kenyan student to attend secondary or post-secondary school for one year. KEEF will send donors a biography written by their sponsored student and will provide regular updates at least once a year.

For donors  who find it difficult to sponsor an individual student for four years we suggest two options:

1. Join with friends to sponsor a student.

In many cases community groups, school classes, retired teachers associations, service clubs, churches and other organizations cooperate to sponsor students. In lieu of the usual gifts for upcoming holidays or birthdays, individuals may wish to make a gift in the name of a family member or friend – to a child who, otherwise, could never pursue an education!

2. Contribute to the KEEF Student Support Fund.  We welcome donations of any amount to this fund, Most of the students helped by this fund are already in school and for some reason cannot find fees to continue. Often we find that the person helping the student has died or become ill and is unable to continue with funding. KEEF ensures that these students meet our criteria of having a C+ average in two out of three terms and most of them far exceed that.

The Student Support Fund also helps students whose fees are over $500 (this is usually in Form 4 – the final year of secondary school – where there are extra fees for exams, etc.). The Student Support Fund can also assist those students who need money for one time only expenses.

Check our gift cards flyer.  Make a donation in someone’s name and KEEF will send a gift card. You can donate to the Student Support Fund, buy a solar lamp ($25), or a bicycle ($100).

All of the monies donated to KEEF are designated for educational purposes in Kenya.  Our very low administrative costs are covered through sales of Kenyan crafts and other special fund raising events.

Tax receipts will be issued for all contributions.

A NOTE FOR CURRENT SPONSORS
KEEF must pay student fees in January each year. If you haven’t already sent in your sponsorship for the coming year, please do so by mid-December to give us time to send funds to Kakamega.

POSSIBLE TAX BENEFITS FOR CANADIAN DONORS
The Canadian government has eliminated any capital gains on publicly listed securities and mutual funds that are donated to a registered charity and has increased the limit so that people are able to claim up to 75% of their net income and carry forward any excesses for five subsequent years. This rule change has prompted many people to redirect stock sales to charity rather than see 50% of their gains ultimately taxed as income.

All Canadians can take advantage of these tax changes. Charitable giving is one of the best ways to reduce tax burdens. A gift made in stock can have a double benefit, reducing both capital gains taxes and income taxes at the same time.

If you are going to realize investments, please consider donating to KEEF. For more information contact your financial adviser and communicate with KEEF Board member Margaret (Peg) Klesner, who coordinates donations and revenue from fund raising. (Contact details above).
